Written under pen name back in 2018, this feature looks at Temukus, a village precariously nestled on the slopes of Bali’s Mount Agung, which had been spewing ash. Located in a gray area on the edge of the designated danger zone, the government gave the villagers two options: evacuate or weather it out.
Among those interviewed who chose to stay was a Balinese Hindu priest, who offered deep insights into the cultural and religious significance of their heritage land on the sacred volcano. The feature also shares the stories of villagers who relocated to evacuation camps, providing a human perspective often overshadowed by viral images of the erupting volcano and narrow reporting from mainstream media on how the volcanic ash disrupted Western tourists’ travel plans.
